Watoto Rescue Center – Expanding Our Kenya Mission

Emily Bosh and Peter Mburugu at Harambee in August.

Over $13,000 was raised at UPPC’s Harambee to help us move ahead with work on the Watoto Center. Watoto is the Swahili word for “children.” It is our hope that we will eventually see a fully functioning physical plant on the land we were able to purchase thanks to a generous donor a couple of years ago. While in Meru recently, Peter Mburugu visited the site and was able to hire local labor to fence the property. It is always our joy to make use of local folks who are in need of work.

The center will serve all children who come in need with special attention given to the most desperate. While some of the village children are in safe, secure homes, others are not. They will be able to receive a hot meal, first-aid, tutoring for school work and counsel from adults serving at the center. Even without a building, we are able to assist families, hungry due to the current drought situation.

125Peter’s visit to Meru last month was very fruitful in that he was able to break through a local bureaucratic obstacle that has stood in our way for over a year. He was able to obtain a much-needed government certificate that lends credence to the ministry and allows it to operate under tax-exempt status. We applaud the tenacity with which Peter went about getting this done, as it took some creative thinking on his part. It is exciting to see things moving forward. The progress may be slow at times, but we patiently move along by the grace of God.

Another great piece of news from Kenya is that we saw several of our sponsored kids take big steps in their education. Twelve youngsters graduated from the 8th grade level, advancing to high school. 27 students graduated from high school. UPPC’s Cherish sponsorship ministry has assisted over 500 kids since it began in 2004.
